Parliamentary event celebrates 60th anniversary of SCEME

The Society of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SCEME) has celebrated its 60th anniversary.

To honour the occasion the society held a parliamentary reception at the House of Commons, hosted by Minister of State for Business and Enterprise, Mark Prisk (right of picture).

SCEME was formed in 1951 to provide a platform for mechanical and electrical engineers working for Local Government Authorities. ‘The society has come a long way since its inception 60 years ago and the House of Commons event was an opportunity to mark the achievements of the society throughout that time,’ said current SCEME president Phil Harris (left of picture).

‘Over the years the society has become a vital network for engineers involved in local government work and in more recent years we have seen the scope of the society broaden beyond building services engineers to encompass sustainability, energy conservation and communication matters.’

SCEME currently has around 70 members who meet up four times a year to discuss the latest topics and initiatives within the sector. In 1998 the Society widened its membership criteria to include professional engineers working for commercial organisations which provide engineering design and management services to Local Authorities.

The Society enjoys close links with the Department for Education and is represented at a senior level of CIBSE, its associate organisation of Architects, SCALA, and the UK Wiring Regulation Committee.

‘SCEME works hard with other trade bodies, professional associations and specialist organisations to share best practice about good quality sustainable design, effective engineering maintenance, and compliance with statutory standards. This celebration was a chance to recognise this work and the achievements of our members over the past 60 years,’ added Phil.
