WM Dyer Electrical begin to deliver BIM Projects

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is revolutionising the way built assets are conceived, designed, constructed, managed and maintained. sectors such as aerospace, shipbuilding and automotive industries have employed similar processes over recent decades to significantly improve their product, save time, reduce cost and reduce risk.

The construction industry is very diverse. As clients seek to gain a higher return on investment and value for money, as well as a better quality product this means only one thing – we must change the delivery process.

In today’s world, we have a collective responsibility to ensure costs are reduced, improved Health & Safety practises are in place and to do our bit to reduce the Carbon Footprint. By adopting BIM, this gives the ability to achieve aims such as these along with many other benefits.

The cost of building has increased by 100 per cent over the last 20 years compared to Motor Cars at around 15 per cent. BIM presents an opportunity to improve performance recognised by the UK Government targets – aiming to Improve & Deliver Projects 50 per cent quicker and also to Reduce Initial Cost of Construction & Whole Lift Cost by 33 per cent.

For WM Dyer, BIM was a must. William Dyer commented, ’Our team combines the knowledge and experience from client, supplier and academic backgrounds – as well as holding many years of practical experience working on a diverse range of products across all sectors. Due to the level of experience we hold, we have the ability to evidence the benefits and challenges of BIM. This allows us to work quickly and efficiently with clients, analysing the level of support required throughout the project.’

BIM allows the Project Team and the users to share a virtual, digital model of a project’s geometry and data properties throughout its entire lifecycle. It marks a shift from the use of traditional document based information management, to a fully integrated digital process, with consequent major benefits for productivity, quality and sustainability. The technology aspects of BIM have often been emphasised, but the key difference is the collaborative working practices it encourages.

This makes BIM a powerful ally in the battle for greater productivity, risk reduction, sustainability and safety. It also helps reduce waste and cut costs.

BIM is a broad term relevant to most sectors in the built environment and despite the acronym, can be used for both construction and infrastructure projects including transport and energy assets. It is equally applicable to new and existing facilities.

WM Dyer are currently delivering projects at BIM Level 2, with the desire to implement BIM Level 3 at every opportunity. They believe this will improve the effectiveness of projects and assist their clients with ongoing asset management.
