The report covers data on the JIB Benefits Scheme, which provides employee benefits such as health assessments, private medical treatment, life assurance and other benefits to some 12,000 JIB electrical operatives across the industry.
Musculoskeletal problems represented the largest proportion of medical conditions covered by claims (40 per cent), followed by cancer then heart and circulatory diseases. In 2012, claims were settled on behalf of over 1,000 JIB operatives under the private medical scheme, with an average claim value in excess of £2,000.
Under the life assurance benefit, cancer was the most frequent cause of death, at 44 per cent of all claims. Natural causes followed (26 per cent) along with heart failure at 17 per cent. A total of over £1m has been paid out to dependants over the last three years to help surviving relatives, with just under £400,000 paid in 2012.
