Sustainable heat pump chosen for North Yorkshire barn conversion

A historic 19th century barn conversion located in the rolling country hills of Clapham, North Yorkshire, is benefiting from renewable energy provided by the latest air source heat pump technology from Danfoss.

The old barn was converted into a large four bedroom house in the 1970s and, since moving into the property nine years ago, the owners have been looking for a more efficient and sustainable way of heating their home.

Heating and hot water was originally provided by an Aga style range cooker and oil boiler, with immersion heater back up and a log stove, due to the property being in an off-gas area. The DHP-AQ heat pump from Danfoss has now transformed the barn conversion into a more comfortable living space, whilst also significantly reducing the family’s carbon emissions.

The homeowner explained, ‘I was looking for a more sustainable alternative to my old oil boiler, as I was conscious about my environmental footprint, especially with living in such beautiful countryside. We considered a biomass boiler, but eventually decided that an air source heat pump would be most efficient, both in terms of cost and space. A few of my friends had heat pumps installed and I was very impressed when I visited their homes.’

An initial heating survey was carried out by MJ Energy Services and, based on these findings, approved installation company BritishEco recommended a Danfoss air source heat pump.

Heating is delivered via radiators, some of which were renewed and extra radiators were fitted as part of the installation. Electricity is supplied to the home via a solar PV system which the owner had installed in 2011.

The owner also benefitted from funding through the government’s Renewable Heating Premium Payment, which offers £850 towards the cost of a heat pump installation.
