ECA updates wiring regulations guide to comply with new amendments

The Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) has updated its Guide to the IET Wiring Regulations, following recent amendments.

The regulations (BS761:2008 – 17th Edition, Amendment 1) have been updated by the IET, to reflect their harmonisation with the international wiring principles (IEC 60364) and the European standards (CENELEC HD).

As a result of the changes, all contractors must ensure their wiring work complies with the update. A declaration of this must be clearly recorded on the Installation Certificate.

The most significant change for contractors appears in Part 6; new regulations state that Periodic Inspection Reports (PIRs) will now be replaced by an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). This new report will be used for all types of electrical installations, and must include a Condition Report Inspection Schedule.

Giuliano Digilio, head of technical services at the ECA, commented, ‘Along with changes in Part 6, there are other crucial amendments contractors need to be aware of, such as new coding for inspections, and new regulations on Surge Protection Devices (SPDs). The updated ECA Guide to the Wiring Regulations is an essential part of any contractor’s toolkit. Those unfamiliar with the changes or unsure if their work is compliant will particularly benefit from assistance from the Guide.’
