GreenBrook discusses the challenges facing contractors, specifiers and wholesalers when it comes to ensuring product quality and performance.

There are more and more LED companies entering the market at the moment offering non-compliant products, but as active members of both BEAMA and the LIA we are working hard to try and stamp this out.
The UK will be faced with many challenges over the next few years where product quality and performance will become the forefront of choice for contractors, specifiers and wholesalers. Standards are rightly increasing and this should be embraced by responsible manufacturers to lead the way in demanding high-quality, performance and compliance from all their products.
In our industry, the specification of the lighting products we sell are often determined and selected by the lumen output stated on the packaging or marketing material. In speaking with our technical colleagues and consultants at the LIA, we have established that the LED lamp output values (lumens) can vary dramatically depending on which values are being quoted. This information can be very misleading as to what will actually be achieved upon installation, and this is dependent on a number of different parameters – i.e. whether the product has a clear or opaque lens, the heat dissipation values it offers and basic manufacturing variations – all of which can point to a loss of around 20% of the light output from the ‘raw’ lamp output.
We feel claims should not be made without performance evidence anymore and we urge you to question these statements yourself. The request for IES files, reports showing results/certificates from independent test houses and conformance certification must become recognised as standard practice for contractors and consultants when pricing projects.
