Pipes dream at Midlands SkillElectric

Carl, a student at the host college and employed by AF Electrical Services, beat nine other competitors in a challenging task to install conduit and trunking with three electrical circuits.

Ben Wall of Arrowsmith Electrical and North Warwickshire and Hinckley College took second place, with third place awarded to Samuel Roach of Cripwell Building Services and the Burton Training Organisation.

On winning, Carl said, ‘The competition was very tense, so to come out as the winner is a great feeling. I hope everyone back at home is proud of me, as I wanted to show how hard I was working for them. Having the support of my family, college and employer gave me a big boost.’

The highest scoring competitors from the event now have the chance to compete at a grand final in November, held at The Skills Show at the Birmingham NEC, where they will face competitors from across the UK and strive to be named SkillElectric champion.

Neil Collishaw, head of competitions at SummitSkills, organiser of the event, said, ‘This is the second year we’ve visited Burton and South Derbyshire College, they have been excellent hosts and there was a real buzz in the air with SkillElectric, SkillPipe and SkillPlumb all being held on the same day.

‘We were also delighted that a number of our sponsors came to lend help and support, so our thanks go to them, as well as to the enthusiastic tutors who visited to cheer on their students.’

SkillElectric is a feeder route for competitors to potentially go forward and represent their country in 2015 at Brazil at the biennial WorldSkills competition – the world’s largest skills competition.
