NET sponsors search for Britain’s best young installer at SkillELECTRIC

Training charity National Electrotechnical Training (NET) is supporting SummitSkills’ search for the UK’s best young electrical engineer, as the industry’s most talented young installers pit their skills against each other in the 2012 SkillELECTRIC competition.

SkillELECTRIC tests competitors’ performance in tasks drawn from the role of the electrician in an intensive series of practical tests based on real life work. The winner could have the opportunity to travel to Germany next year to represent the UK in the international WorldSkills competition.

Stephen Plant, NET business development manager, said, ‘SkillELECTRIC is a fantastic opportunity for our best under-25s to show off their skills, and NET is delighted to be involved with the competition. These individuals have to demonstrate the highest level of ability and competence. We hope others will draw inspiration from these competitors, and take home a firm understanding of why we must be proud to maintain such a high skill level.’

Following a series of regional heats, the industry is gearing up for the final, which will be held at the new vocational skills showcase, The Skills Show, taking place at the NEC in Birmingham on 15th-17th November. Five hundred young people from around the world are expected to compete in 45 vocational skills contests.

Plant added, ‘As custodians of the AM2 and FICA competence assessments for the electrotechnical industry, our role is to promote and secure the training and competence needs of the industry’s workforce. We felt this was a marvellous opportunity to invest back into the industry and encourage high standards in electrical work.’
