JTL shocked by Panorama revelations

JTL has expressed its shock and disappointment at last night’s Panorama programme which focused on bad practice in apprenticeship provision by a number of providers and employers.

Although the programme represented only a small proportion of bonafide apprenticeship schemes, it will have undermined confidence and trust on the overall apprenticeship brand.

JTL’s chief executive, Denis Hird, said, ‘We fully support the Minister’s decision to root out and deal appropriately with the training providers and employers involved in such unscrupulous practices which take advantage of young people and the tax payer.’

Over the last 20 years JTL has delivered more than 50,000 fully employed, four year apprenticeships, the vast majority of who remain active within the industry either as employers in their own right taking on a new generation of young apprentices or as skilled crafts people, or supervisors and managers.

Denis Hird added, ‘It is our belief that government and the network of providers should take the responsibility to continue to provide opportunities for young people to world class standards that the term apprenticeship implies and that the government funding invested in this is used for the benefit of young people rather than for individual profit.’
