EC4U launches electrician guide for homeowners

‘In 2013/14, more than 2,800 fires were linked to electrical installation faults, with 70 people killed and 350,000 seriously injured due to electrical accidents. This needs to change,’ says Nigel Best, director of EC4U.

Only 14 per cent of homeowners are aware of Part P of the Building Regulations, which set the national standard in the UK for all electrical work. All electricians must comply with the regulations if they are carrying out installation work in a domestic environment.

Research carried out by the charity, Electrical Safety First, found that over 18 million people are too embarrassed to ask if an electrician is registered to carry out electrical work. With more than 20,000 unregistered electrician firms currently operating in the UK, it is important that homeowners are wise to the crucial indicators of a registered electrician.

The EC4U online guide outlines the difference between notifiable and minor works, as defined by Part P of the Building Regulations; it explains how consumers can check that their electrician is registered; it tells consumers the insurances that an electrician is required to hold to carry out work and the paperwork that they should provide once work is completed.

‘A worrying lack of public awareness on this issue, together with a failure to properly enforce the regulations has created a dangerous mix, where lives and property are unnecessarily being put at risk,’ adds Nigel. ‘Our industry has a responsibility to educate the homeowner, and make home electrical works safer. This online guide is an important contribution to bringing the information that needs to be readily available to the attention of the homeowner.’

The Electrician Awareness Guide is available on the EC4U website, and includes codes for embedding the info graphics located within the guide. To view the guide, visit: https://www.electriciancourses4u.co.uk/useful-resources/electrician-awareness-guide-homeowners
