NAPIT Registration largely welcomes government response to CLG Select Committee Report

Commenting on the response, David Cowburn, managing director of NAPIT Registration said, ‘We very much welcome the government support of the single mark and register for electrical work in dwellings in England and Wales, which will be launched later this Summer and in which NAPIT have played a pivotal role.

‘We also welcome the government’s commitment to discuss with industry whether any changes need to be made to the current arrangements to ensure supervision of electrical work is robust. NAPIT Registration have consistently advocated individual competence in place of supervision. We hope that the discussion which follows this commitment leads to further improvement of the skill level of those working for a certified company in order to improve overall electrical safety in people’s homes.

‘However, while we are pleased that a levy on registered installers to pay for enforcement was seen as unfair, we are disappointed by the government’s lack of suggestions as to how enforcement of Part P of the building regulations could otherwise be improved. We strongly suggest that on-the-spot fines should be explored in more detail to see if the “general rule” mentioned in the response could be bent in this case.’
