The company is offering the opportunity to train for an NVQ Level 2 qualification in multi-skilled maintenance operations which means apprentices will have the chance to learn a number of construction trades. Lovell will pay all training costs with the apprentices working on site in Barnet and studying at the Building Lives Academy in Camden or Hackney.
‘This is a great opportunity to start a career in construction,’ said Lovell regional manager Tony Rogers. ‘Our apprentices gain invaluable practical experience, as well as receiving plenty of support with their college studies. They are each appointed a training mentor, who develops a programme for the individual and oversees their progress.’
The Lovell Repairs and Maintenance business provides planned refurbishment and electrical work services to Barnet Homes.
‘Barnet Homes’ apprenticeship scheme is in its third year with about 77 per cent of our apprentices having gone on to find work within the organisation,’ commented Derek Rust, director of operations, Barnet Homes. ‘So we wholeheartedly support our contractors Lovell in extending any opportunities for apprenticeships to young people in Barnet. It’s an excellent example of how by working with our partners, we can deliver wider benefits to the local community.’
Lovell is looking for applicants with good references from an employer and school/college and a real desire to work in the construction industry. ‘Most importantly, we want people with a passion for the business and determined to make the most of the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification and solid industry experience, building their skills working alongside qualified tradespeople. Providing jobs and training locally is important to Lovell and we are particularly keen to hear from people living in the borough interested in working with us,’ added Tony Rogers.
Lovell currently has two apprentices working in Barnet. Jack Simmonds (pictured), 18, from Finchley, is training to become an NVQ Level 3 qualified electrician. He said, ‘Since joining the team at Lovell I have really enjoyed getting stuck in and I am picking up lots of new skills and abilities. The people I have worked with so far have been very welcoming and I feel like part of the family already. I look forward to my future with Lovell and hope to gain as much experience as I can here.’
Both Jack and fellow apprentice Aaron Brown, also studying for his Electrical NVQ Level 3 award, recently took part in an information event at Middlesex University organised by the London Borough of Barnet Children’s Service to enable young people aged 16-19 to find out more about apprenticeships and other post-16 options.
