NAPIT says EST report highlights importance of hiring MCS certified installers

The Heat Pump Field Trials: Phase 2 report, part of a study carried out between 2010 and 2013, is one of the most comprehensive of its kind. It analysed the wide variation in current performance of 44 heat pump sites across the UK and found that properly designed systems, installed to the highest standards, are the key to ensuring the best levels of long term efficiency and output.

These figures come after the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) announced domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) tariff levels of 18.8p/kWh for ground source heat pumps and 7.3p/kWh for air source heat pumps. The domestic RHI scheme is expected to be introduced in spring 2014. DECC will also offer an extra set payment of £230 per year where homeowners take out metering and monitoring support packages for heat pumps.

In context, according to the EST an average solar PV installation can generate savings and earnings of around £645, with installation costs ranging from £5,500 to £9,500. Ground and air source heat pumps by comparison are generally more expensive to install, at around £9,000 to £17,000 and £6,000 to £10,000 respectively – but the savings and earnings projected in this report are significantly higher.

Commenting on the report, NAPIT director of standards David Cowburn said, ‘The findings of this study are very positive. Not only do they highlight the significant savings and earnings some homeowners could soon be making, they also point to the effectiveness of well designed systems, installed to a very high standard. The report therefore emphasises the importance – and the necessity for those looking to access incentives such as RHI – of hiring Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certified installers. This is important as all MCS certified Installers have consistently demonstrated their ability to carry out high quality renewable technology installations in compliance with industry standards.’
