JTL urges fast action on doubling in London of apprentices’ grants

Extra funding of £1,500 has been announced by the Greater London Authority and the London Enterprise Panel, adding to the AGE 16 to 24 Grant, available throughout England.

The rules of the new scheme are simple. Firstly, to qualify, employers must be based in the Greater London area and the additional benefit only applies to the first 1,000 who meet the age criteria. Secondly, the enhanced grant will apply to apprentices where the start date of the young person is between 10th June to 31st December 2013.

‘It is important that those in the building services engineering trades of electrical, plumbing, engineering maintenance, heating, ventilation and refrigeration gain a significant share of this London only scheme,’ said Caroline Turner, operations director of JTL. ‘One of the key aims of the London Enterprise Panel is to promote enterprise, innovation and sustained employment in London. With so many skilled people in building services engineering having to be brought into the capital from both other parts of the country and from overseas, extra funding like this will reduce contractor costs and help prepare the sector in London for a better future.’

Up to 10 grants can be claimed per eligible employer on a first-come first-served basis, but employers working swiftly with JTL can benefit from the long standing expertise and the most successful set of apprenticeship outcomes of any large training provider working in the sector. By undertaking such partnerships, this scheme could therefore be just as accessible to small businesses as to larger organisations.

‘There really is no time to waste,’ continued Caroline Turner. ‘It is important that these valuable grants boost building services engineering skills in London, and that the funding is not lost to other economic sectors.’
