EU electric vehicle mandate vital for charging up industry growth, says ECA
The Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) says the EU mandate on electric vehicle charging points is the political leadership that is urgently needed if the market is to grow.
Under the EU Clean Energy policy, launched on 24th January, the UK is required to increase the number of electric vehicle charging points to 122,000 by 2020, an increase of over 1,700 per cent on 2011 estimates of 700 charging points across the UK.Paul Reeve, ECA head of business policy and practice, said, ‘The latest EU initiative sets challenging, but binding, national targets for electric vehicle charging points. It is obvious that building a successful UK charging infrastructure cannot simply be left to the market. We need political leadership to break the vicious ‘low range, low demand’ cycle that currently blights electric vehicle sales. Major investment in our electric transport supply infrastructure will also boost GDP and jobs, and cut carbon.’
