Young people interested in a career in the building services engineering (BSE) sector will have an opportunity to find out more about the industry, and will be able to ‘Have a Go’ at skills in a worldwide celebration of vocational skills at WorldSkills London 2011.

WorldSkills London 2011 is a unique competition where young people from across the globe compete to be the best in their chosen profession and SummitSkills, the sector skills council for Building Services Engineering, is a partner in the event.

It is estimated that 1,000 young people from over 50 countries will take part over four days in professional level competitions in 45 different skill areas. Within the Construction, Planning and Built Environment field there are 13 skills which include; areas as diverse as wall and floor tiling, plumbing and heating, electrical installations and stone masonry. The event occurs every two years in a different country or region. It is the vocational equivalent of the Olympics, and the 41st WorldSkills competition this year takes place at Excel London from 4th – 8th October 2011.

SummitSkills will be supporting three of the UK team who will be competing against other young people from all over the world with the aim to win the refrigeration, electrical installations and plumbing and heating competitions.

The three UK finalists were selected after winning SummitSkills’ Skill M&E competitions, four national skills competitions to find the UK’s most talented BSE workers. Stuart Miller, competing at WorldSkills for the refrigeration medal, was winner of the 2010 SkillFridge competition. Chris Young won 2009’s SkillElectric competition and will be competing at WorldSkills for the electrical installations medal and Shane Trevitt will be competing for the WorldSkills plumbing and heating medal following his win last year at SkillPlumb. All three fought their way through regional heats and a national final and will now be competing with best of the best from all over the world.

SummitSkills will also be awarding its annual Awards for Excellence (formerly the National Training Awards) for building services engineering at the WorldSkills London event to recognise the talent and exceptional standards of work of employees in the sector. The winners of the Awards for Excellence will celebrate in style at the awards ceremony on 7th October at WorldSkills London, ExCeL. Keith Marshall OBE, chief executive, SummitSkills, said, ‘WorldSkills London will showcase a huge amount of expertise that employees in vocational careers have and it is fantastic to see such variety in the trades represented. The WorldSkills competitions recognise the incredible talent of the young people in the BSE sector and we hope WorldSkills London 2011 will spark the ambition of young people and encourage them to enter this valuable and rewarding sector.
